Log Cabin: Fighting for equality from another angle
by Dale Giesige
and Dave Schulz
Cleveland-Twenty-five percent of the LGBT vote went to the Republican presidential candidate in 2000. This election result has been hard to believe for some gays and lesbians, but there is a growing movement in the LGBT community toward more moderate and conservative values.
As gays and lesbians make gains in their right to have legally recognized marriages and families, and in their right to serve their country with honor, the more gays and lesbians look at life through a different political and social perspective.
Log Cabin was founded to battle one of the nation's first anti-gay ballot measures-California's Proposition 6 in 1978. The first Log Cabin activists enlisted Ronald Reagan to publicly oppose the measure, which was then defeated.
Since then, Log Cabin Republicans has grown and expanded with chapters across the
country to become a leading voice on the national stage on behalf of the mainstream concerns of the gay and lesbian community.
Log Cabin Republicans of Greater Cleveland seeks to be a voice for those in the community who believe in the principles of individual liberty and responsibility, free markets, a strong national defense, and equal not special treatment for gays and lesbians in all walks of life.
The Northwest Ohio chapter was formed in 1999.
Log Cabin Republicans are loyal to their party just as the Stonewall Democrats are loyal to their political party. Log Cabin of Greater Cleveland strives to be an important resource and conduit for both the LGBT community and the Republican Party in northeast Ohio.
The national Log Cabin Republicans as
well as the local chapters in Cleveland, Toledo and Columbus believe that inclusion is a "win/win" situation for the gay community, the Republican party, Ohio, and the country.
Recently, the national Log Cabin Republicans launched a $1, million "Defend the Constitution" television campaign in targeted cities and states throughout the country fighting the proposed Federal Marriage Amendment.
The Log Cabin Republicans, among other issues, are also fighting against the military's "don't ask don't tell" policy, and fighting workplace discrimination based on perceived or real sexual orientation.
The Log Cabin Republicans of Greater Cleveland are making another appearance at Cleveland's Pride Festival. If you go to Voinovich Park on this special day, please say hello to the hard working staff and get information on Log Cabin's "Defend The
Constitution" campaign as well as information on membership, and much more.
